The Playground Music Center was founded by James Leonard in 1961. As a high school band director, Leonard realized the difficulty of purchasing instruments locally, so he and his wife began selling band supplies to area schools.
These transactions soon took off, and as Leonard’s reputation and customer base began to grow, he decided to open the Playground Music Center. This name derives from the term “Playground Area,” which was the original name given to the Emerald Coast Region of Florida.
Today, the Playground Music Center operates out of several locations throughout Central Northwest Florida and also has affiliations with other music stores in Alabama and Georgia.
When it comes to purchasing a new instrument, it’s important to go somewhere with not just an impressive inventory, but a knowledgeable and approachable sales team willing to help.
That’s exactly what you’ll find at the Playground Music Center. They offer an extensive range of instruments, such as guitars, keyboards, and drums, as well as audio and recording equipment.
If you’re not quite ready to commit to a new purchase, they also offer instrument rentals. These rentals come with low monthly fees and can be returned at any time with no further obligation.
Plus, with the ‘Try Before You Buy’ program, you have the opportunity to apply up to 12 months of rental payments towards an instrument purchase.

Private Lessons
Private lessons are taught on a month-to-month basis, with one 30-minute session each week. They can be booked Monday through Saturday, with times throughout both the morning and evening to adapt to our customers’ varying schedules. The types of private instruction include:
Group lessons
Group lessons meet once a week over an 8-week period and are available for piano, keyboard, guitar, drum set, and ukulele. They offer several courses for folks of all ages and skill levels.
